Qui sommes-nous?

When I was little, I used to wander the alleys of the medina of Fez, and observe the meticulous gestures of the craftsmen.

Since then, I have kept this fascination for these treasures that markets and souks keep secret. As I traveled, I discovered that craftsmanship is very different in each country.

Attached to tradition, I therefore wanted to honor the ancestral craftsmanship of Eastern countries while adding while being more modern.

How did you get the idea to create this “Modern Oriental” brand?

By inviting friends to my house for a meal, I realized that my crockery was my old student crockery, mismatched and bought in major stores (Ikea and supermarket in others).

The next day, I set myself the goal of buying quality, handcrafted tableware that I would use when I received home. And that's when I realized that you needed a substantial budget to buy tableware of artisanal quality. At this high price, there was only the handmade side, highlighted, without additional finishing (without drawing, without gold, etc.).

Traveling through the neighborhoods of the old city of Fez during my childhood, I told myself that I could highlight craftsmanship, and craftsmanship could help me create different quality products, refined while being more modern.

Why the name “Modern Oriental”?

Le Moderne Oriental was inspired by my many trips to different oriental countries where their know-how is unique and different according to each city and country. The word "Modern" is a factor because it is the idea of bringing traditional craftsmanship up to date.

          _cc781905-5cde-3194 -bb3b-136bad5cf58d_           _cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_         _cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_   (Morocco)

Why?

As said several times in the various texts before, it is the city of my childhood. I strolled in this city with my grandfather (rest in peace) so that I do not forget the traditions so special of this city.

According to the websitevisitmorocco.com, Fez is the city “custodian of Moroccan history”.

According to other sources, Fez is: The queen of the Maghreb, the prestigious, the refined, the Athens of Africa, the spiritual capital.

Fassi craftsmanship is characterized by its richness and diversity.

Craftsmen in Fez specialize in:

  • Pottery

  • Brassware

  • Traditional sewing (the Tarz)

  • Leather goods

  • Zellige and marble
